OpenAI Puts Third-Party Apps Inside ChatGPT, Launches Preview Apps SDK

Powered by the Model Context Protocol, a preview Apps SDK turns ChatGPT into a platform for embedded app interfaces.

Overview

  • Interactive integrations from Spotify, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Zillow, Booking.com and Expedia are live now for logged‑in users outside the EU across Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans.
  • Users invoke apps by name inside a conversation and connect their accounts on first use, after which ChatGPT can render app UIs, maps, carousels and videos directly in the chat.
  • OpenAI demonstrated real use cases, including generating Spotify playlists, designing in Canva and browsing Zillow listings on an interactive map without leaving the chatbot.
  • Developers can start building with the MCP‑based Apps SDK today, with app submissions, a public directory and monetization features, including instant checkout and an agentic commerce protocol, slated for later this year.
  • OpenAI says apps must minimize data collection and disclose permissions, though specifics such as potential access to conversation history have not been fully detailed; additional partners like DoorDash, Uber and Target are planned later in 2025.
