OpenAI Puts Codex in the ChatGPT Mobile App for Remote Coding Control

The change turns ChatGPT into a remote console for Codex so work can keep moving when you are away.

Overview

  • OpenAI, which announced the update Thursday, began rolling out a preview in the ChatGPT app on iOS and Android for all plan tiers.
  • The mobile app links to a Mac, Mac mini, or remote machine running Codex and loads that machine’s live state so users can review threads, approve commands, switch models, or start new work from a phone.
  • Files, credentials, and permissions remain on the host device through a secure relay, and the phone receives screenshots, terminal output, code diffs, test results, and approval prompts in real time.
  • The preview connects to Codex on macOS today with Windows support promised later, and it requires updating both the ChatGPT mobile app and the Codex desktop client.
  • OpenAI also launched enterprise controls including Remote SSH, scoped programmatic tokens, Hooks, and HIPAA-compliant local use for eligible workspaces, and it reports more than 4 million weekly Codex users.
