OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank Announce Five New U.S. Stargate Sites, Pushing Pipeline to Nearly 7 GW

The push positions Stargate as a centerpiece of President Trump’s private‑sector AI buildout.

Overview

  • New data centers are planned in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; Lordstown, Ohio; Milam County, Texas; and an undisclosed Midwestern location, with three built with Oracle and two with SoftBank.
  • OpenAI says the expansion, together with Abilene and ongoing projects, brings Stargate to nearly 7 gigawatts of capacity and more than $400 billion of investment over the next three years, with a longer‑term target of about 10 gigawatts and up to $500 billion.
  • Nvidia said it will invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI and supply data‑center chips, while OpenAI and partners plan debt‑based chip leasing to spread capital costs, according to reporting.
  • At the flagship Abilene complex, one of eight buildings is already operating and a second is nearing completion, with the site designed for about 900 megawatts and hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GB200 chips.
  • Project leaders tout closed‑loop cooling and on‑site gas backup to curb water use, as residents and experts raise concerns about grid strain, emissions and community impacts; Tuesday’s plan is expected to create 25,000 onsite jobs.
