OpenAI Merges Chat and Work Tabs in ChatGPT Desktop App

The company says the unified workspace will begin a limited test and a single ChatGPT–Codex token allowance will start in December, changing how paid plans track usage.

Overview

  • OpenAI emailed users Monday to announce it is combining the Chat and Work tabs into one workspace that lets users bring files, plugins and web actions into a single continuous session.
  • The new interface is starting as a limited test for select users so OpenAI can gather feedback before a wider rollout.
  • An updated support page says Plus, Pro and Business plans will draw ChatGPT and Codex usage from one shared token pool beginning in December while Instant-model chats will remain exempt from that pool.
  • Codex will stay as a separate view in the app, and OpenAI has moved account balances and reset info to Settings → Usage, though exact December pool sizes and reset mechanics have not been published.
  • The change follows similar moves in the industry and has practical effects for teams: it requires revising capacity planning and chargeback rules, routing routine chats to Instant models, and re‑testing automations once the unified workspace reaches accounts.
