Overview
- OpenAI updated the ChatGPT for Chrome extension to let the assistant read multiple open tabs and use their contents for answers and summaries.
- The company added a Work mode that, after user authorization, can fill forms, send messages, download files, and organize or group tabs from the browser itself.
- Enabling those actions requires broad Chrome permissions to read and modify site data and manage tabs and downloads, but OpenAI offers per-site prompts, allow/block lists, and labels a global “always allow for all sites” option as higher risk.
- The Chrome side panel now gives access to full chat history so users can continue conversations or arrange tasks without leaving the page, and OpenAI says the update is available to all subscription tiers and to other Chromium browsers.
- Because the extension runs inside users’ logged-in browser sessions, it can operate on services like Gmail, LinkedIn and Salesforce, which boosts productivity but raises privacy and enterprise data‑protection concerns that may shape adoption and policy choices.
