OpenAI Launches Study Mode to Turn ChatGPT Into Interactive Tutor

Guided by learning scientists from more than 40 institutions, it prompts students through exercises instead of offering direct answers.

ChatGPT's Study Mode makes it harder to get answers right away. That's a good thing.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, delivers remarks at the Integrated Review of the Capital Framework for Large Banks Conference at the Federal Reserve on July 22, 2025 in Washington, DC.

Overview

  • Study Mode went live on July 29 for all ChatGPT Free, Plus, Pro and Team users, with rollout to ChatGPT Edu scheduled in the coming weeks.
  • The feature uses Socratic questioning, personalized feedback and knowledge checks to foster active learning and deep comprehension.
  • OpenAI deployed the initial version via custom system instructions for rapid release and iteration based on student feedback.
  • Study Mode embeds pedagogical techniques – including step-by-step guidance and reflection prompts – to shift ChatGPT from an answer machine into a learning companion.
  • OpenAI plans to bake Study Mode behaviors into its core models and add visualizations, goal setting and progress-tracking tools in future updates.
