OpenAI Launches In-Chat App Platform for ChatGPT

OpenAI begins a non‑EU preview featuring launch partners, focusing on data minimization alongside forthcoming user controls.

Overview

  • The new Apps run natively inside conversations with interactive interfaces and can be invoked by name or suggested by ChatGPT to perform real-time tasks without leaving the chat.
  • Launch partners include Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify and Zillow, with Spotify live in 145 markets in English (EU excluded) using opt-in account linking and stating it will not share audio content to train OpenAI models.
  • Developers get an Apps SDK built on the Model Context Protocol and a new Agent Kit to build and instrument agents and UIs, with Sam Altman citing 4 million developers and 800 million ChatGPT users.
  • The preview is available to all registered users outside the European Union across Free, Go, Plus and Pro tiers in English, with expansion to the EU and Business, Enterprise and Edu plans planned later in 2025 alongside an apps directory, review process and monetization via Instant Checkout.
  • OpenAI also announced API and model updates including GPT‑5 Pro in the API, Codex on GPT‑5 with Slack integration, a cheaper gpt‑realtime‑mini voice model and a Sora 2 preview for video creators.
