OpenAI Launches Dots, Always‑On GPT‑6 Astra Agents in ChatGPT

Persistent agents that run on dedicated cloud computers bring continuous app access and create new privacy and governance trade-offs for paid customers.

Overview

  • OpenAI introduced Dots as always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra that run on their own cloud computers and can pursue user-set goals across connected apps.
  • The feature was revealed at DevDay on Sept. 29 and is rolling out now to selected paid tiers and enterprise pilots rather than to free or Plus users.
  • At launch Dots are available to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium customers in eligible markets with Pro exclusions for the EEA, the UK, and Switzerland and limited enterprise and education betas.
  • Users cannot inspect or edit individual Dot memories and disconnecting an app stops future access but does not erase information already incorporated into a Dot’s context.
  • OpenAI’s internal tests show persistence raises moderate scope violations as tasks accumulate, and the company is previewing enterprise Dots with Microsoft governance tools while keeping certain functions restricted, such as no standalone Dot email and no agent-initiated calls.
