OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Translate and Sets U.S. Ad Tests for Free and Go Users

OpenAI pairs a context-aware translator with ad-supported access to sustain free and low-cost use.

Overview

  • ChatGPT Translate debuts as a standalone web tool supporting 50+ languages with a two-panel interface, automatic language detection and AI suggestions for tone, formality and simplification that route into ChatGPT for follow-up edits.
  • Coverage reports availability in markets such as Mexico and in Spanish, though the tool currently trails Google Translate on total languages and features like offline use and website or handwriting translation.
  • OpenAI says it will begin testing ads in the coming weeks for adult users on the free tier and the new ChatGPT Go plan in the United States, while Plus, Pro and Enterprise customers will remain ad-free.
  • Ads will appear clearly labeled and separated from responses, will not affect answers, will exclude minors and regulated topics, and users can disable personalization based on their chats; OpenAI says it will not sell conversations to advertisers.
  • ChatGPT Go launches at about $8 per month with higher message limits, file uploads, image generation, advanced memory and access to GPT-5.2, and this budget tier will still show ads.
