OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Teachers With Free U.S. Access Through 2027

OpenAI is courting schools by pairing its latest model with strict privacy safeguards.

Overview

  • The teacher-only workspace is rolling out with partner districts representing roughly 150,000 educators, including Fairfax County, Houston ISD, Fulton County, Prince William County, Capistrano Unified, and Dallas ISD.
  • Access is free for verified K–12 teachers in the United States through June 2027, with OpenAI indicating pricing may follow after the free period.
  • OpenAI says data shared in the workspace will not be used to train its models by default and the service is designed to help schools meet FERPA requirements.
  • Capabilities include unlimited messages with GPT-5.1 Auto, web search, file uploads, image generation, connectors for Google Drive, Microsoft 365 and Canva, custom GPTs, and collaboration tools.
  • District-level administration features include domain claiming and SAML SSO, with eligibility verification handled by SheerID, and availability limited to the U.S. at launch.
