OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Atlas, Its AI Browser, on macOS

A macOS-first release pairs deep ChatGPT integration with user-controlled safety features to encourage switching from incumbent browsers.

Overview

  • The Chromium-based app embeds a persistent ChatGPT sidebar, cursor-triggered in-page chat, and optional browser memories to personalize browsing.
  • An Agent Mode can execute multi-step tasks such as booking travel or editing documents, and it is available as a preview for Plus, Pro and Business accounts.
  • OpenAI says memories are opt-in and clearable, interactions pause for confirmation on sensitive sites, and code execution, file downloads and extensions are restricted.
  • Users can sign in with a ChatGPT account and import Chrome bookmarks, passwords and browsing history with one click to ease migration.
  • Atlas is live globally on macOS now with Windows, iOS and Android versions coming soon, and Alphabet shares fell after the announcement with reports of intraday declines near 5% and a lower close.
