OpenAI Faces GDPR Complaint Over ChatGPT's False Murder Allegations

Privacy group Noyb alleges OpenAI violated GDPR by failing to ensure data accuracy and not allowing corrections after ChatGPT falsely accused a Norwegian man of murdering his children.

ChatGPT falsely claimed Norwegian man Arve Hjalmar Holmen murdered two of his children and attempted to kill a third, mixing real personal details with fabricated accusations.
Noyb filed a complaint with Norwegian data authorities, asserting that OpenAI violated GDPR by not ensuring data accuracy or providing mechanisms for correcting false information.
The false claims about Holmen are no longer generated by ChatGPT, but concerns persist that the defamatory data may still exist within the AI model's internal systems.
Under GDPR, personal data must be accurate, and individuals have the right to request corrections, which Noyb argues OpenAI has failed to adequately implement.
OpenAI has previously faced GDPR enforcement, including a $16 million fine and temporary ban in Italy in 2024, highlighting ongoing regulatory scrutiny of generative AI tools.
