Overview
- OpenAI staff found a thumb-sized, encrypted audio recorder plugged into a TV USB port in a San Francisco executive conference room on Sept. 30 that investigators say was installed around Sept. 28.
- Prosecutors allege the accused is 35-year-old Saudi national Abdulrahman Alfozan and that security camera footage showed him near the room on multiple dates despite lacking authorization.
- Court filings say internal workplace searches and chatbot prompts between Sept. 24–30 sought building addresses, meeting-room schedules and technical guidance on building, concealing and remotely accessing recorders.
- Alfozan was arrested on Oct. 9, charged with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications, and faces up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release if convicted.
- Authorities have publicized the device, CCTV images and search records but have not publicly determined whether any recordings were successfully accessed or removed, and officials say the case will shape tighter insider and counterintelligence protections for AI work.
