OpenAI Debuts Study Mode in ChatGPT to Guide Student Learning

Leveraging Socratic questioning through custom system instructions, the feature will arrive for ChatGPT Edu subscribers once OpenAI refines it with student feedback.

ChatGPT's Study Mode makes it harder to get answers right away. That's a good thing.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, delivers remarks at the Integrated Review of the Capital Framework for Large Banks Conference at the Federal Reserve on July 22, 2025 in Washington, DC.

Overview

  • Study Mode transforms ChatGPT from an answer machine into an interactive tutor by prompting students with Socratic questions and step-by-step scaffolding.
  • The feature is available now to logged-in users on ChatGPT Free, Plus, Pro and Team plans, with a rollout to Edu subscribers expected in the coming weeks.
  • Developed with input from teachers, learning scientists and pedagogy experts at more than 40 institutions, Study Mode runs on custom system instructions that allow rapid iteration.
  • Students can toggle Study Mode on or off during conversations and currently cannot be locked into it by administrators or parents.
  • OpenAI plans to integrate Study Mode behaviors directly into its core models, add features such as visual aids and goal tracking, and partner with Stanford to study its impact on learning outcomes.
