OpenAI, Anthropic and Block Launch Agentic AI Foundation to Standardize AI Agents

The Linux Foundation will steward donated protocols to foster interoperable, safer agent systems across vendors.

Overview

  • Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol, OpenAI’s AGENTS.md and Block’s Goose framework were transferred to the new foundation to be developed under open governance.
  • AAIF is housed at the Linux Foundation with a directed-fund model and technical steering committees, which set roadmaps without granting unilateral control to any member.
  • Founding backers are joined by companies such as Google, Microsoft, AWS, Bloomberg and Cloudflare, with Cisco announcing it has joined as a launch Gold member.
  • The initiative seeks common interoperability and shared safety patterns for agent technologies to avoid fragmented, proprietary stacks.
  • The effort reflects the shift from chat-based systems to agents that take actions, with its impact hinging on broad adoption, evolving standards and real-world implementations.
