OpenAI Adds Apple Messages Plugin to ChatGPT for Mac

The plugin lets the ChatGPT desktop app read, search, prepare, and send iMessage, SMS, and RCS conversations while enforcing per-send approval, optional persistent approval with revocation steps, workspace admin controls

Overview

  • OpenAI released an Apple Messages plugin for the ChatGPT macOS desktop app that can read and search Messages chats on a Mac and prepare or send iMessage, SMS, and RCS messages through Apple’s Messages app.
  • The feature is available across all ChatGPT plans and in ChatGPT Work and Codex but is included only in the Apple silicon (arm64) build of the Mac app and does not work on Intel Macs.
  • By default the app requires users to approve each outgoing message and its recipients, users may grant persistent approval to skip future prompts, and OpenAI documents how to revoke that access and warns about the increased risk.
  • OpenAI notes a known issue where certain task access settings can disable the approval prompt and suggests switching task settings to restore confirmations, and managed-workspace administrators can disable the Messages plugin via existing Computer Use controls.
  • The same release also synced pinned chats between desktop and iOS, added read-only Codex thread snapshots with redaction cautions, introduced Site co-editing and editable hosted URLs, and expanded optional Computer History to paid users in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland.
