Open-Source ‘Just the Browser’ Strips AI and Bloat From Chrome, Edge and Firefox

Open-source scripts repurpose enterprise policies to remove unwanted add-ons via a command-line install.

Overview

  • Developed by journalist-programmer Corbin Davenport, the project is available on GitHub under the MIT license with clear documentation and a one-command setup.
  • Supported browsers include Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox, with Linux currently limited to Firefox.
  • Installation runs via a shell script on macOS and Linux and via an elevated PowerShell on Windows, and no graphical interface is provided.
  • The scripts disable generative AI assistants, shopping integrations, sponsored content and external AI search while preserving useful local features such as on-device translation and minimizing telemetry and experiments.
  • Users can revert or customize the applied policies, are advised to update the scripts as browser settings change and should generally continue receiving automatic browser updates; the tool is not an ad blocker and does not support mobile platforms.
