Open Society Foundations Pledges $50M to Boost Civic Engagement Among Women, Youth
The funding, to be granted between 2024 and 2026, will support nonprofits working on issues including reproductive justice, climate change, and voting rights.
- Open Society Foundations, led by Alex Soros, has pledged $50 million to boost civic engagement among women and young people over the next three years.
- The funding aims to support democracy in the U.S. and will be directed towards nonprofits working on issues such as reproductive justice, climate change, voting, and gun safety.
- The new commitment is in addition to previous funding commitments made by Open Society Foundations to U.S.-based organizations since 2020, including $220 million for Black-led organizations working for racial justice, $100 million to Latino organizations for civic engagement and immigrants’ rights, and $52.6 million for organizations working in Indigenous and Asian communities.
- The funds will be granted between 2024 and 2026 and will include a mix of funding for nonprofit organizations and advocacy groups, which are allowed to do more work campaigning directly around issues.
- The funding is explicitly not timed to influence the 2024 presidential election and is nonpartisan, according to Laleh Ispahani, the executive director of Open Society-U.S.
