Ontario legislature approves 35% pay raise for MPPs, restores pension plan

The legislation aims to attract high-calibre candidates by ending stagnant compensation that supporters say undermined recruitment

  • Bill passed all readings on May 29 and will receive royal assent the same day to lift MPP base pay from $116,550 to $157,350
  • Increase is retroactive to the last provincial election and will add about $6 million in payroll costs this fiscal year
  • Premier Doug Ford’s salary will rise to $282,129 and cabinet ministers’ pay will jump to $223,909 under the new scale
  • A pension plan will be reintroduced for MPPs with at least six years’ service based on a three-year best average salary
