ONPE Closes Sign-Ups: Nearly 10,000 Join Remote Voting Pilot as 3.17 Million Choose Polling Sites

An external audit now determines whether the limited 2026 trial can proceed.

Overview

  • ONPE reports 9,983 volunteers for the remote voting pilot, with 67.5% from the Armed Forces and National Police (6,743).
  • The pilot pool skews young and male, with 65.47% aged 18–39 and 69% men, and includes prioritized groups such as 1,447 Peruvians abroad and 865 health workers.
  • Prior turnout data show 56% did not vote in 2021, 55% missed 2022 and 43% skipped both, indicating the trial targets persistent absenteeism in specific populations.
  • The system is undergoing a legally required external audit and uses DNIe with digital certificates, encryption, digital signatures and blockchain logs, with ONPE to email acceptance decisions by January 5, 2026.
  • Separately, 3,169,487 electors selected polling-site options through Elige tu Local de Votación, and those who did not choose will be assigned within their DNI-registered district.
