Only 10% of Argentine Students Finish Secondary on Time With Core Proficiency

The new cohort index finds faster progression to the final year alongside a nationwide setback in mathematics learning.

Overview

  • Argentinos por la Educación’s IRE shows a decline to 10% for the 2013–2024 cohort from 13% in 2022 and 16% in 2020 for students finishing on time with satisfactory results in language and math.
  • Despite weaker learning, 63 of 100 students reached the last year in the expected time, up from 61 and 53 in earlier cohorts, indicating broader progression without commensurate skills.
  • Aprender 2024 results underpin the trend, with language up 2.7 points and mathematics down 5.5 points nationally, a fall experts link to pandemic disruptions for this cohort.
  • Regional gaps are pronounced and track socioeconomic profiles: CABA reaches 23% completion-with-learning versus 3% in Chaco and 4% in Santiago del Estero, Misiones and Catamarca.
  • Because Aprender microdata were not released at the individual level, the IRE used estimates, and the Education Secretariat says a virtual data desktop with disaggregated results will open in October.
