Only 10% Finish Secondary on Time With Adequate Learning, New Index Finds

Researchers attribute the decline chiefly to steep math losses compounded by socioeconomic disparities.

Overview

  • Argentinos por la Educación’s updated Índice de Resultados Escolares shows the share meeting timeliness and minimum learning in Language and Mathematics fell across cohorts from 16% (2009–2020) to 13% (2011–2022) to 10% (2013–2024).
  • While 63% of the 2013 cohort reached the last year of secondary at the expected time, most did not achieve satisfactory results in both core subjects.
  • Between 2022 and 2024, Language attainment rose about 2.7 percentage points nationwide, but Mathematics dropped about 5.5 points, driving the overall decline.
  • Outcomes vary sharply by province: CABA is at 23%, Tierra del Fuego and Córdoba at 13%, Santiago del Estero, Misiones and Catamarca at 4%, and Chaco at 3%.
  • This edition used Aprender 2024 and the Relevamiento Anual with an estimation step because individual Aprender microdata were not fully published; the Education Secretariat says a public portal with disaggregated 2024 data is expected in October.
