Online Grocery Service Picnic Halts Deliveries to Duisburg’s ‘Weißer Riese’ Over Safety Concerns

Suspending orders in early May follows two incidents that compromised staff safety as the company consults police on secure return conditions

Overview

  • The suspension affects all 320 apartments at Ottostraße 58-64 and will remain until safer delivery conditions are assured.
  • Residents have reported youths tampering with Picnic vans and stealing food while drivers were inside the building.
  • Duisburg police state they have no records of incidents involving Picnic employees at the ‘Weißer Riese’ since January.
  • DHL previously halted deliveries in July 2024, resumed twice-weekly escorted service in September, and restored full doorstep access by mid-February 2025.
  • Other providers such as Flaschenpost, HelloFresh, Lieferando and Rewe continue regular deliveries to the high-rise.
