Online Banking Use in Germany Hits Record 86% as Seniors Go Digital

A Bitkom survey shows that branch proximity has declined in importance as nearly half of customers rely entirely on digital channels

Overview

  • Overall online banking usage rose from 81% last year to 86% this year among Germans aged 16 and above.
  • Users aged 65 to 74 increased their online banking uptake from 77% to 83% year-on-year, and those 75 and older more than halved the gap with a rise to 43%.
  • Fully digital banking adoption edged up from 42% to 44%, now outpacing the 41% who still visit branches occasionally.
  • Consumers rate bank fees (96%), deposit insurance (95%) and free ATM withdrawals (87%) as their top criteria in selecting a bank.
  • Only 37% of people aged 16 to 29 view branch networks as vital compared with 71% of those over 65.
