Ongoing Eruption at Guatemala’s Fuego Volcano Forces Hundreds to Flee

INSIVUMEH forecasts 40 more hours of eruptions with ash plumes rising up to 7,000 metres

Overview

  • The volcano has produced multiple explosions and ejected incandescent material up to 150 metres above the crater, sending lava flows into the Seca and Ceniza ravines
  • INSIVUMEH reports that the heightened activity, which began on June 4, is expected to continue for up to 40 hours
  • CONRED has evacuated 594 residents from five communities in Chimaltenango, Escuintla and Sacatepequez to emergency shelters
  • Authorities have suspended classes at 39 schools and closed the main road linking southern Guatemala to the colonial city of Antigua
  • Ashfall has been reported in Panimache I and II, Morelia, Santa Sofia, El Porvenir and other villages west of the volcano
