- The national NAPLAN results released Wednesday show about one in three students are in the bottom two proficiency bands for reading, writing or numeracy, meaning they are not meeting expected learning outcomes.
- Year 3 numeracy fell sharply and was described by ACARA’s chief executive as “clearly concerning,” with Queensland recording 43.3 percent of Year 3s in the lowest bands and Western Australia nearly 40 percent in the same tiers.
- Despite the Year 3 slump, numeracy improved at Years 5, 7 and 9 with roughly 29,000 more students reaching the highest ‘exceeding’ level in 2026 compared with 2023.
- The results again expose entrenched gaps for Indigenous students, children from low‑socioeconomic backgrounds and those in regional or remote schools, who are far more likely to need additional support.
- Education ministers and ACARA have begun a targeted review of early primary maths and are rolling out national Year 1 numeracy checks plus evidence‑based measures such as phonics, small‑group tutoring and earlier screening to try to reverse the decline.
