One Suspect Arrested After Armed Theft of Matisse and Portinari Prints From São Paulo Library

Interpol has been notified as investigators mine surveillance and a seized vehicle to locate a second suspect and recover the 13 works.

Overview

  • Police arrested Felipe dos Santos Fernandes Quadra, 31, in Mooca and said a second identified suspect remains at large.
  • Thirteen prints were taken on Dec. 7 by two armed men: eight Matisse works from the rare Jazz book and five Portinari illustrations from Menino de Engenho.
  • City Smart Sampa cameras captured the suspects carrying the artworks in public, with footage showing pieces briefly set down near a trash pile.
  • The getaway vehicle was found, seized and sent for forensic examination, and the case is being handled by the Cerco specialized unit.
  • The pieces were insured, according to cultural officials, who declined to disclose values and emphasized that monetary coverage cannot replace the originals, which have not been recovered.
