One Kerala Tourist Dead, One Missing After Frozen Sela Lake Gives Way in Arunachal

Search operations will resume this morning following an overnight pause due to treacherous high‑altitude conditions.

Overview

  • Police identified the deceased as Dinu, 26, and the missing tourist as Mahadev, 24, both part of a seven‑member group visiting Tawang.
  • The incident occurred when a group member fell through the ice and two companions entered the lake to help; the initial victim got out, but the rescuers were submerged.
  • Army divers from the Gajraj Corps, along with SSB, SDRF and local police, recovered one body and will continue the search for the missing tourist.
  • The recovered body is at Jang Community Health Centre for a post‑mortem, and the remaining tourists are being sheltered and cared for at nearby Army camps.
  • Authorities had previously posted warning signboards and issued a December advisory cautioning visitors not to walk on frozen lakes due to unstable ice.
