One in Six Drivers Who Ignore MOT Advisories Suffer Breakdowns or Crashes

Overview

  • An RAC survey of 1,460 drivers found that 44% received one or more MOT advisories for issues like worn brake pads and low tyre tread.
  • More than half of those warned, 54%, did not act on the advisory recommendations.
  • Seventeen percent of drivers who ignored these advisories went on to experience a vehicle breakdown or collision.
  • Department for Transport figures show 39 deaths and 1,865 injuries in 2023 crashes where vehicle defects were a contributing factor.
  • The RAC warns that MOT advisories are basic safety flags and not a replacement for a full service by a qualified mechanic.
