One in Four Reports Record Rise in Men Seeking Help for Childhood Sexual Abuse

The charity says heightened attention after the schools abuse inquiry encouraged more survivors to come forward.

Overview

  • Launching its 2024 annual report today, One in Four said contacts rose 17% to 7,674 sessions for 1,292 people, with men accounting for 62% of service users.
  • Requests for advocacy support increased 21% to 5,461 as more survivors sought help navigating legal and institutional systems.
  • The rise followed last year’s scoping inquiry that documented 2,395 allegations across 308 religious-run schools, according to the charity.
  • A Commission of Investigation established in response to the inquiry is in preliminary work to set up its structures and processes.
  • The organisation also unveiled its 2025–2029 strategic plan as the justice minister warned about pornography’s impact on youth, and it noted a neurofeedback therapy pilot of 211 sessions alongside expanded training for frontline professionals.
