New findings from Ined reveal a sixfold rise in bisexual and pansexual identification among young adults since 2015, reflecting shifting cultural norms and greater social acceptance.

Overview

  • The 2023 Envie survey found that 19% of French women aged 18–29 identify as non-heterosexual, with 5% pansexual, 10% bisexual, and 2% lesbian.
  • Among men in the same age group, 8% identify as non-heterosexual, with 3% homosexual and 3% bisexual.
  • The proportion of young adults reporting lifetime attractions to both sexes rose significantly, from 7% to 37% for women and from 2% to 18% for men between 2015 and 2023.
  • Factors such as the MeToo movement, normalization of homosexuality, and marriage equality in 2013 have contributed to this generational shift.
  • The study reflects broader trends in Europe and North America, where similar increases in bisexual and pansexual identification have been observed.
