One in Five Mexican Internet Users Faced Cyberbullying in 2024, INEGI Finds

Women users reported higher rates of digital harassment, with fake profiles topping attack methods on WhatsApp and Facebook.

  • In 2024, 18.9 million internet users in Mexico, or 21% of those aged 12 and over, experienced some form of cyberbullying.
  • Female users were hit harder, with 22.2% reporting harassment compared to 19.6% of male users.
  • Contact via fake identities was the most common tactic at 36%, followed by offensive messages (34%) and offensive calls (22.6%).
  • WhatsApp and Facebook each accounted for roughly 40% of reported incidents, and calls to cell phones made up 29.3%.
  • To defend themselves, 66.6% of victims blocked harassing accounts, 14.1% ignored the abuse and just 11.2% reported incidents to authorities.
