One in Five Germans Report State Discrimination as Commissioner Demands AGG Expansion

New data reveal that existing law offers no recourse for citizens facing bias in dealings with state offices

Overview

  • A federal survey shows 19 percent of respondents experienced unfair treatment by government agencies and 9 percent labeled it discrimination.
  • People with migration backgrounds (33 percent), disabilities or chronic illnesses (30 percent) and those with low socioeconomic status (42 percent) reported higher rates of bias.
  • Sixteen percent of participants felt unfairly treated by the police and 6 percent identified those encounters as discrimination.
  • Ninety-five percent of respondents said the state should set an example in anti-bias protection and 80 percent backed independent complaint offices.
  • Ferda Ataman called for extending the AGG to federal authorities and for every Land to establish ombud offices using Berlin’s LADG as a model.
