The collapse was reported at about 1:58 p.m. at a public library build in Gwangju’s Seo-gu district. Firefighters pulled a 47-year-old worker from the debris in cardiac arrest, and he was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Rescuers have located a second worker and are attempting an extraction, while two others remain unaccounted for. Fire officials said the structure appeared to give way during the pouring of ready-mixed concrete, and a site official reported the second-floor roof fell to the first floor where no interim supports were in place. The project is a Gwangju metropolitan government build valued at 51.6 billion won, planned to span 11,286 square meters over two above-ground stories and two basement levels on a former waste incineration site.
