One Dead, One Seriously Injured in Two Overnight House Fires on Chicago’s South Side

Authorities are investigating the cause of both blazes.

  • Firefighters responding around 10:15 p.m. to the 7000-block of South Bell Avenue found a 75-year-old woman with severe burns who was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center and later died.
  • A second fire reported about 1:08 a.m. in the 6300-block of South Oakley Avenue spread to three houses before crews brought it under control.
  • A 39-year-old woman from the Oakley Avenue incident was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.
  • Four adults were displaced in the Oakley Avenue fire, and no other injuries were reported at that scene.
  • Police and fire officials extinguished both fires and have opened investigations into their causes.
