One Dead, One Injured After Dumpster Emptied Into Garbage Truck Outside Long Island School

An ongoing investigation with a pending autopsy is under way following the May 29 incident that left one man dead and another injured outside a Long Island school.

Overview

  • Suffolk County police believe the two men were sleeping inside a Commack shopping center dumpster when it was emptied into the garbage truck
  • The truck drove about five miles before stopping at William T. Rogers Middle School in Kings Park at around 6:30 a.m.
  • One man was pulled alive from the truck and taken to Huntington Hospital for treatment of a leg injury, while the other was pronounced dead at the scene
  • Authorities have opened an investigation and police say no foul play is suspected; the medical examiner’s office will determine the deceased’s cause of death
  • Kings Park Central School District officials confirmed normal school operations continued and there was no threat to students or staff
