One Dead, One Critically Injured in Pre-Dawn House Fire in Mondéjar, Spain

Authorities say the blaze apparently started in mattresses on the ground floor.

  • The fire broke out around 3:45 a.m. in a three-storey residence on Calle Solana Alta, according to the Castilla-La Mancha 112 service.
  • Seven male residents described as immigrants were inside the home at the time.
  • One man died from smoke inhalation, and another was in critical condition after being transported by UVI to Hospital de Guadalajara.
  • Five others suffered minor injuries from smoke exposure or from jumping to escape, and two basic life-support ambulances took them to the same hospital.
  • Firefighters from Azuqueca de Henares extinguished the blaze overnight, the house was left uninhabitable, and Guardia Civil, an emergency physician and local Protección Civil also responded.
