One Dead in Secondary I-25 Crash Near Walsenburg, Southbound Lanes Closed

CSP says sun glare triggered a slowdown that preceded a chain-reaction collision now under investigation.

Overview

  • Colorado State Patrol reports the initial crash occurred around 7:32 a.m. near southbound mile marker 40 when a semi slowed for sun glare and was rear-ended by a box truck.
  • With traffic moving slowly and the first vehicles on the shoulder, a separate collision followed as a Ford F250 hit a Hyundai Elantra, rolled, and struck a Hyundai Sonata.
  • The 46-year-old Ford driver died at the scene, the Elantra driver was hospitalized, and the Sonata driver was uninjured.
  • The box-truck driver from the first crash suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted to a hospital, according to CSP.
  • Both directions of I-25 were closed for nearly two hours; northbound reopened at 9:12 a.m., while southbound remains shut with a detour at Exit 41 as the CSP Vehicular Crimes Unit investigates and crews conduct cleanup.
