One Dead in Amsterdam Flat Fire as Entire Building Is Declared Uninhabitable

Authorities are investigating the cause and relocating roughly 90 residents while stepping up responses to other suspected arson and explosion incidents in Dutch towns.

Overview

  • The blaze broke out just before 7 p.m. on the third floor on Harry Koningsbergerstraat, with a second fire starting when an evacuating resident left a pan on the stove, creating multiple seats of fire that complicated the response.
  • Emergency services escalated to a very large incident and Grip-1, used drones to assess tactics, and evacuated about 90 people; five were treated for injuries, including a firefighter taken to hospital who is in stable condition.
  • All apartments have been deemed uninhabitable due to smoke, soot, water and glass damage, the building has been sealed and guarded, and evacuees were received at a nearby sports venue with support from the Red Cross and Salvage.
  • In Amsterdam-Zuidoost, Mayor Femke Halsema ordered a three-month closure of a home on Gerrit van den Boschpad after two explosions, a bullet letter and camera footage of a suspicious scooter repeatedly passing the address.
  • Police are also probing a series of fires elsewhere, including a Bleiswijk mill that burned a day after another nearby structure fire and roughly 18 small suspected arson fires in Emmeloord-West that have unsettled residents.
