One Dead, At Least 20 Injured in 17‑Vehicle Fog Pileup on Highway 99 Near Fresno

CHP continues its investigation into unsafe speed for conditions under dense fog.

Overview

  • Seventeen vehicles, including a semitruck, collided around 9:15 a.m. Sunday on southbound Highway 99 near North Avenue just outside Fresno, according to CHP.
  • Authorities say visibility dropped to roughly 10 to 15 feet as slowing traffic was struck by vehicles traveling too fast for the conditions, creating a chain-reaction crash.
  • A 61-year-old man died after exiting a car and being struck; a woman who had also exited was thrown over a guardrail about 40 feet and hospitalized with major injuries.
  • Fresno Fire reports at least 20 people were hurt with injuries ranging from minor to major, and responders used a city bus to transport several patients, including young children.
  • Southbound lanes were closed for hours and fully reopened by about 1:30 a.m. Monday, and investigators are seeking witnesses at 559-262-0400.
