One Dead as Rescuers Evacuate Climbers From Kamchatka’s Vilyuchinsky Volcano

Authorities say the group was unregistered on a route closed since July under a regional natural-emergency regime.

Overview

  • An emergency call was logged at 16:55 local time, and an Mi-8 helicopter with medics and rescuers departed at 18:22.
  • Teams landed at about 1,500 meters and moved upslope to reach the climbers before starting evacuations.
  • Officials confirmed one fatality, a second climber is in serious condition receiving on-site care, and a third was found uninjured and is being guided down.
  • Preliminary assessments point to arm fractures that prevented the injured from descending independently.
  • Roughly 45 personnel from EMERCOM, the Center for Disaster Medicine, regional ‘TsOD’ rescuers, and volunteers are working on a steep, icy slope.
