One Dead After Mass Brawl in Gelsenkirchen as Homicide Probe Begins

Investigators now probe seven suspects in what they describe as the climax of a protracted family conflict.

Overview

  • Police say 20 to 30 people clashed on Pommernstraße around 8 p.m. Sunday, with knives, electroshock devices and baseball bats used.
  • At least five people were seriously injured; a 56-year-old man died in hospital from stab wounds, three men aged 24 and 27 remain hospitalized, and a 56-year-old woman was treated and released.
  • Six suspects—three men aged 16, 29 and 52 and three women aged 25, 28 and 50—were detained at the scene, and a seventh suspect aged 24 was later identified.
  • A homicide commission has taken over the case, with suspects being questioned and possible custody decisions pending as forensic work continues.
  • Police mounted a large-scale operation with a helicopter, cordoned the area and appealed for witnesses, noting a separate stabbing at the Bahnhofscenter earlier that day is being investigated independently.
