One Dead, 10 Hurt as Truck Hits Warkari Procession on Old Pune–Mumbai Highway

Authorities report a continuing probe with conflicting accounts of the driver’s custody status.

Overview

  • The collision occurred around 6:30 am at the Kamshet ghat section near Darshan hotel as a dindi of pilgrims headed to Alandi from the Uran–Panvel area.
  • Police identified the deceased as Priyanka Prabhakar Tandel, reported as 54 or 55, and said about ten others were hospitalized with injuries.
  • Officials said the container truck was traveling from the Pune side and apparently lost control on the slope, striking an autorickshaw in the group before hitting pilgrims.
  • Angry pilgrims and locals blocked the old Pune–Mumbai Highway to demand the driver’s arrest, and police later impounded the truck.
  • Earlier reports said the driver fled and was being sought, while a late report in Hindustan Times quoted a Kamshet police inspector saying a driver identified as Chandrashekhar Ramankat was detained and booked under BNS and Motor Vehicles Act sections.
