On Election Day, Colorado Voters Decide Future of Universal School Meals

Higher costs from stronger participation in the meals program frame the choice for voters.

Overview

  • Two statewide propositions will determine whether Healthy School Meals for All continues providing free breakfast and lunch to all public school students or is scaled back.
  • Ballots must be received by county clerks by 7 p.m. MT, with returns accepted at drop boxes or in person rather than by mail.
  • A Colorado Department of Education report says the program cost about $162 million in its first year versus a $115 million projection due to higher-than-expected participation.
  • As of Thursday before Election Day, nearly 355,000 ballots were cast, with roughly 30% from Republicans, 28% from Democrats and about 40% from unaffiliated voters.
  • Denver voters are also weighing the Vibrant Denver bond and a flavored-tobacco question, and initial statewide results are expected shortly after polls close with full tabulation continuing into the night.
