On 11th Anniversary, Mexico Presses Extraditions in Ayotzinapa Case as Families March in Capital

Sheinbaum says renewed extradition pushes aim to unblock a probe stalled by missing Army files.

Overview

  • Mexico has reasserted its request to Israel to extradite ex-investigator Tomás Zerón and formally asked the United States to extradite two suspects, identified in press reports as José Ulises Bernabé and Abraham Eslava.
  • Parents of the 43 lead a megamarch at 4 p.m. from the Ángel de la Independencia to the Zócalo, with authorities expecting more than 3,000 participants and road closures along Reforma, Juárez, Eje Central and 5 de Mayo.
  • The families laid out five demands: delivery of 800 Sedena folios, clarification of 17 students taken to the Iguala barandilla, renewed analysis of cellphones, extraditions of Zerón and Bernabé, and investigations of Guerrero officials.
  • Following a clash at Campo Militar 1-A in which masked protesters used a truck to try to breach a gate and set it on fire, Sheinbaum condemned the violence and said her government will not use repression.
  • The administration installed a new special prosecutor, floated bringing in international experts via the UN, and cited recent arrests and a U.S. deportation, yet families say these steps have not produced decisive evidence.
