Omar Defends Posts Criticizing Charlie Kirk as House Tribute Highlights Deep Divide

She condemns the killing, rejecting a legacy she calls hateful.

Overview

  • On Friday, the House approved a resolution honoring Charlie Kirk’s life and legacy with 310 votes, as 58 Democrats voted no, 38 voted present, 26 did not vote, and 95 voted yes among Democrats; the Senate had unanimously passed a shorter version earlier in the week.
  • A censure effort led by Rep. Nancy Mace against Rep. Ilhan Omar over her comments failed in a 214–213 vote, with several Republicans joining to block it.
  • In a CNN interview, Omar said she condemns political violence and Kirk’s assassination but would not honor his legacy, which she said belongs in the “dustbin of history.”
  • Omar acknowledged reposting a video likening Kirk to “Dr. Frankenstein” because she agreed with parts of it, and she claimed she has seen people fired for sharing Kirk’s words while saying she has not seen people celebrating his death.
  • Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez condemned the killing but opposed the House tribute, arguing it glorified views she described as rooted in division and recalling that supporters of the resolution portrayed Kirk as a unifying figure.
