Omar Defends Kirk Critique and Crockett Explains ‘No’ Vote as Backlash Mounts to House Tribute

Their televised defenses followed the House’s 310–58 vote to honor Charlie Kirk and a narrowly defeated GOP push to censure Ilhan Omar.

Overview

  • Rep. Jasmine Crockett told CNN she opposed the Kirk resolution because his rhetoric “specifically targeted people of color,” noting that, by her count, only two white members voted no.
  • Crockett compared celebrating Kirk’s legacy to elevating “Confederate relics,” cited his past criticism of her, and stressed that political violence is unacceptable and that he should still be alive.
  • Rep. Ilhan Omar stood by reposting a video casting Kirk as “Dr. Frankenstein” and called him a “reprehensible, hateful man,” while pointing to earlier condolences for his family.
  • The House on Friday passed a resolution honoring Kirk 310–58, with all Republicans and 95 Democrats in support, and a separate censure effort against Omar was tabled 214–213.
  • Golfer Phil Mickelson attacked Omar in posts on X and later criticized both Omar and Crockett, as a large memorial for Kirk was held Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Arizona.
