Omar Abdullah Flags Off Third Kashmir Marathon in Srinagar

Government organisers say the high-prize event is designed to boost tourism by showcasing Srinagar’s landmarks and to encourage local long-distance runners.

Overview

  • The third edition was officially flagged off on Sunday, Oct 25, 2026, by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and drew more than 1,800 domestic and international participants.
  • Organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department, the race offers a total prize pool of Rs 3.17 crore with Rs 25 lakh for the open-category winner and new awards set aside for local runners.
  • Full and half-marathon courses pass scenic and heritage sites such as Dal Lake, Chinar-lined avenues, Mughal gardens, the Zabarwan range, Shankaracharya Temple, Pari Mahal and the Dargah Shrine to market the Valley to visitors.
  • Srinagar Traffic Police issued advisories on Oct 25 detailing road closures, cut-off points and diversions to keep the route clear and protect runners and commuters during the event.
  • The race featured wide age-group participation and notable individual stories, including a double upper-limb amputee and a 10-year-old entrant, and follows two earlier editions that established the marathon as a recurring tourism and athletics fixture in the Valley.
