Omaha Forward Deng Mayar Dies in Utah Reservoir Drowning

Blackridge Reservoir remains closed pending an investigation by Herriman police

Overview

  • Herriman police received a 911 call shortly before 6 p.m. on August 16 reporting two people in distress at Blackridge Reservoir and found Mayar had gone underwater about 35 yards from shore
  • Unified Fire Authority, South Jordan Fire Department water rescue teams and the Utah Highway Patrol dive team conducted an hours-long search that ended when a submersible robot located Mayar’s body around 10:40 p.m.
  • Mayar’s friend, 21-year-old Sa Mafutaga, reached shore and was treated at the scene before being transported to a hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries
  • University of Nebraska Omaha and North Dakota officials issued statements mourning Mayar’s death and offering condolences to his family, friends and teammates
  • Herriman police have classified the incident as an accidental drowning with no signs of foul play and will keep Blackridge Reservoir closed until further notice
