Omaha Forward Deng Mayar, 22, Drowns at Utah Reservoir

The reservoir is closed during a police investigation that followed an hours-long search using a submersible robot.

Overview

  • Herriman police said two swimmers were reported in distress at Blackridge Reservoir just before 6 p.m. Saturday, with 21-year-old Sa Mafutaga reaching shore, reentering to help, then being hospitalized and expected to recover.
  • Authorities said Mayar went underwater about 35 yards from shore and did not resurface as Unified Fire Authority, South Jordan Fire, and the Utah Highway Patrol dive team led a multi-agency search.
  • A Utah Highway Patrol submersible located Mayar at 10:40 p.m., divers recovered him around 11 p.m., and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Herriman police said the incident remains under investigation and the reservoir and adjacent areas are closed, and they asked witnesses to contact authorities.
